JD 2240 - Strap Ground or 00 gauge battery cable

Is there a benefit to using the original strap ground A-AL11176 that connects the battery negative to the firewall instead of a 00 gauge battery cable?

The strap ground which is 11 inch long is still being made by AI
and sells for $25 plus shipping on Amazon. A 00 gauge battery cable is less than $25 for the same length (11 inch).

Only reason to use the strap is if originality is important.

2-0 cable is more than heavy enough for that little engine.

Welcome to YT.
Your battery will have more voltage available for starting if you will utilize a longer negative battery cable that can be attached to starter mounting bolt or engine block. Attaching negative cable to battery box gives several places to lose electrical continuity between cable attaching point & starter. Rust accumulation between battery box & clutch housing from battery acid overflow is common

Welcome.

Unless you are doing a 100% correct restore, I agree with Tx Jim. Use a longer ground cable and attach the lug end to a starter mounting bolt or other engine bolt.

An advantage of using a strap is their improved flexibility and tolerance of vibration HOWEVER what matters most is the least resistance
(bigger gauge cable) IE the less line voltage drop PLUS if you attach the ground cable on or near the starter versus some thin wimpy sheet
metal such can improve starter performance.

Thank you all for the replies and suggestions. It looks like I will use a 00 gauge battery cable connected to the starter.

Thank you again,
Paul

Wise choice, even if bigger then needed,,, bigger cable = less line voltage drop, and connecting direct to the starter motor is best in my
opinion.
