jd 40 transmission oil

Dale,
Depends where you are and if you use it in cold weather. I use 85-140 gear lube in my tractors up here in the Northeast. I don't use them in the winter. I would use straight 140 if I could get it, but no one stocks it. I have order it. The heaviest you can use keeps the transmission whine down some. If your in cold climate and your using it in the winter I would use 80/90 weight. Good Luck!

(quoted from post at 13:07:48 12/27/20) What type of oil do I need to put in the transmission and final drives on a JD 40
thanks
Dale

John Deere Operator's Manual says SAE 90 for a 40 Standard tractor, so 85W/90 will work. You can down load an Operator's Manual from the John Deere Ag Bookstore for free and save it to your computer so you have that and more info to maintain your tractor. Here is a link to that site.

Here is a picture with the search info entered and boxes checked to guide you. There are a number of different sub-models of the 40 so you need to find yours to get the right manual. Where it says download across from the manual it is free. If you want a hard copy or CD you purchase those. If there was a price beside the download it would be a purchase. HTH. Jim

We use GL140 in both of our 40s during the hot summer months here on the farm in NE Texas.
