John Deere 2640 still does not start

As recommended in an earlier posted I used a jumper wire on the solenoid of my 2640 and I actually was able to start my tractor. So based on
what I had read and the replies I had in an earlier post I felt it was the solenoid so I put a new one on the starter. Turn the key still
nothing happens I turn the key no clicks not nothing. I Know I have a starter that works a solenoid that works the only thing that is left
either the safety switch is bad or the ignition switch is faulty or I have a broken wire. My question is if the safety switch is not working
would the tractor start by using the jumper wire on the solenoid. IS it possible that the ignition switch just went bad. Any more suggestions
that anyone has would be appreciated. Is there a way to test the ignition. Thanks for the help.

In either case a jumper wire bypasses the ignition switch and all the wiring between it and the solenoid, including the safety switch. If you used a jumper between the battery cable terminal and the starter motor terminal to jump around the solenoid, as Resting Relics 1 suggested, it would indicate the solenoid was bad. If you used it between the small start terminal and the battery cable terminal to operate the solenoid, as I suggested, and it started that tells you the solenoid is good. That indicates the problem is between the ignition switch and the solenoid. You can use a jumper wire across the terminals of the safety switch and try starting it, with the key. If that works the safety switch is bad or not adjusted properly. If that doesn't work, you need to use your volt meter to chase the circuit from the ignition switch to the solenoid the see where it is lost, could be a bad ignition switch, bad connector, or broken wire.

I'll add to what Jim.ME stated that neutral start switch could very well could be the problem. Sometimes one can remove neutral start switch then remove a sealing washer or 2 reinstall NS switch & it will operate correctly for many start cycles.

May I be the first to suggest a voltmeter? Check for voltage on both sides of the neutral start switch with the key in "start" position

A much better concept than taking wild @$$ guesses and trying random repairs .

Finally got the 2640 started. The ignition wire running from the ignition switch was apparently broke. I ran a new wire and it started. Thanks for all the help.
