8640 tranny

D range in need of repair? Not terrible but there is no such thing as an inexpensive fix here.

D range shift collar and teeth are dubbed off,, happens when you get out on the road and shift up to D while rolling,, My Dad would dub ours off every couple years,,he couldnt hear it grinding...it is a big job, final drives come off and strip the case, all but the counter shafts needs to come out.

like others said someone was rolling and trying to jam it into D range. I had same thing happen to my 8430. If you don't have to travel far with it you can just use C range.
