John Deere 2640 starter does not turn over

I have a 2640 that I just had started and used yesterday no issues. Today went to start it and the starter does not even kick in. Batteries are charged and I checked at the solenoid seem to be getting 12.68 volts at the solenoid. I am guessing the solenoid went bad would this be possible any advice or suggestions appreciated. Lights and everything else seems to work.

Guessing the 12.68 volts, you got, is on the battery cable terminal of the solenoid. Does it stay 12.68 when the key is turned to start? Have you checked to see what the voltage is to the start terminal of the solenoid when the key is turned to start? Or, after confirming the tractor is in park or neutral, use a jumper wire to go between the battery cable terminal on the solenoid and the start terminal to see if it will turn over. If it does you likely have a bad connection or broken wire between the switch and solenoid.

Tap on the starter at the brush end.

If the brushes are stuck or badly worn this may cause them to make contact for one more start and confirm what's wrong.

(quoted from post at 21:13:38 12/24/20) I took a hammer an hit the solenoid hard a couple of times nothing.

Did you try the voltage checks at the solenoid and the jumper wire test I suggested, or just the hammer test?

Not sure where you are located, but if it is cold you might have gotten moisture in the starter and it could be froze up. Happened to me this morning. I put a hair dryer pointed at the starter and let it run for 45 minutes. Tractor then started right up.

Be careful hitting the newer starters! Most have permanent magnets that will shatter.,then it's a one part number fix.

Have you tried the hazardous Farmer start with a screw driver ?
Make certain that the tractor is out of gear . It is a regular occurrence for the Farmer, his helper or child to be then run over after jumping a starter .

I would try jumping around the solenoid with a jumper wire. If it turns over the solenoid is NG, but if nothing happens you probably have starter issues. Good Luck !
