JD 401c oil leak on PTO shaft

I'm tackling two oil leaks in my 'new to me' 401c. The first to fix is the significant leak on the PTO shaft. I tried to revive an older thread on a similar leak for a 401b (here https://forums.yesterdaystractors.com/viewtopic.php?t=1407819 ) but I don't think I did it right so I'm starting a new thread.

My questions:
1) Is this as simple as removing the 3 bolts and pulling the housing (#1) in order to get to the seal (#3)? I assume the bearing pack (#4- 7)) is pressed into the housing and require special tools and/or methods to get to the seal.

2) Does the entire shaft come out with the housing or does the housing just slide over the PTO shaft that stays in place?

3) Any items to consider before pulling the housing (other than draining the fluid and having the seals ready)? Or having the tractor angled down on a good slope/ditch?

Yes rear shaft & housing can be R&R similar to your photo. CAUTION: be sure pto lever on LH side of trans is in the disengaged position so shift collar will stay on input shaft.

Thanks, TX Jim.

After I pull out the assembly, can the seal be replaced in a field environment using the truck tailgate as my workbench with the usual set of tools in a tool bag? Or will I need to bring it to a shop environment with presses, special tools, etc.?

Field repair will depend on one's mechanical capabilities. The parts photo you posted is for updated pto shaft with tapered brgs. Original brg was ball type with a large snap ring that can be a challenge to remove from housing.

Aahhh- it's making sense now. When I searched the forum earlier and found your guidance to PReed about his PTO leak (the link in my first post), I didn't realize the differences between the ball bearing and roller bearing PTO set ups. I just went back through JDParts for the 401C but I couldn't find any schematics showing the older ball bearing set up-- I only see the 'improved' version with roller bearings. Either way, I'm sure it'll be obvious which one I have when I pull out the PTO. And my TM is saying I'll need to press on/off the bearings so I have a feeling I'll have to bring the PTO assembly into a shop to get after the leaky seal. Again, won't know until I pull it out.

For what it's worth, my serial is 401CD375xxxT which should be an '81 or '82 based on cannonball's info here https://www.yesterdaystractors.com/cgi-bin/viewit.cgi?bd=jd&th=140903 This means my tractor was built in the last couple years of production so not sure if the improved PTO was standard at that time.
