looking at getting around to doing some work on the family's G. it has around 60 lbs compression in both cylinders and an allfuel
manifold and is pretty lazy. want to convert it to gas pistons and a cold type manifold. what kind of hp will I be looking at?
Want to pull f630 3-16 trailer plows with it at the local plow days. what is the difference with the cylinder heads I hear people
talk about?

My dad owned a 1947 G when I was a kid. He had it bored out and put aluminum pistons and I do not know what else was done other than my uncle that owned a John Deere dealership was advising him. When he was done we pulled a 4-14 trailer plow for about 10 years after that. That tractor served us well into the sixties until the new gen tractors came out.

the early cylinder head is a "flat head". About1/2" shorter than the later head. The pushrods need shortened and a spacer plate installed between the carb and air intake elbow. Expensive and not worth the hassle. Your G with an overhaul should pull that 3-16 with no problem.

That tractor stock with only the addition of Gasoline pistons to raise the compression will be all you need to get to "IIRC" 50 to 55 HP.

At the same time the engine was overhauled Dad also added a water pump as well as a bellen (sp) PS unit. We thought we had it great, and we did actually. I agree with the others, you will have plenty of power for 3-16's or 4-14. In my experience I think the 4-14 mounted plow I have pulls easier than my 3-16's mounted plow using the same tractors.
