JD 456 round baler tension cylinder

New to me 456 baler and the tension cylinder is leaking bad out the bottom. Deere lists a seal kit but I do not see how this thing comes apart. Parts list also shows a breather that mine does not have an I further ahead to buy a new cylinder? The one I found has two ports for hoses and mine only has one

What fits in hole in your photo? I will guess cylinder has a snap-ring that must removed from roove for cylinder disassembly. What is your balers serial #?

Your photo doesn't show the gland at the rod end well enough to tell but for certain but, is there a snap ring around the outside of the gland? That is common on cylinders. That flat snap ring keeps the gland from working into the barrel once assembled. If it has that snap ring remove it and tap the gland into the cylinder bore. About 1/2" to 3/4" down in the cylinder barrel there will be a round wire snap ring that keeps the gland from coming out. You can tap the gland into the cylinder enough to tip the snap ring out of its groove which allows one to pull it out. Then you can pull the rod and the gland will come out with it.

When the rod is out, look in the cylinder barrel. That port in the the side, at the bottom, may be mated to a port inside. If so it should have had a vent/breather in it to keep dirt and dust out on a single acting cylinder.

My knowledge of JD smaller rd balers is very limited because I've only owned the JD 4X6 balers.

Would someone please explain how a one way tension cylinder operates on the JD rd baler tension circuit?

I could not see a snap ring, I will take a better picture tonight, there was only the dust seal. I tried seeing if there was something inside once I took the fitting off that goes to the hose but could not see
anything other than the rod.

There was nothing in the hole and that is where the leak is coming from. I would have to look at the serial number tonight, I believe it is 142456. Here is the link to the tension system

Apparently Item key # 45, the breather that should have been in that bottom hole, has been lost at some point in time. A couple pictures of the gland will help give an idea of how it comes out.

Also be aware the cylinder number (AE70983) they show the kit for is a substitution for the original cylinder. That kit may not fit if it is the original, the kit has a note about the cylinder it fits. Check it over carefully, sometime you can find the part number stamped into the outside of the barrel.

Thanks for posting that link. When I viewed JD parts I didn't realize there was another cylinder I had overlooked. I now understand how that tension cylinder operates.
Thanks. Jim

I'm thinking that my cylinder is not serviceable, I think you are right and the seal kit fits the new cylinder number not the old one. I will have to get a new cylinder and also the breather
