New tractor

Hello! Yesterday I just bought a JD 1520 diesel with a JD 145 loader. Runs great, drives great, new tires, and everything works as it should. Came with a set of tire chains and 3 shop manuals. Previously owned by a JD mechanic. The engine starts great and (thank god) the guy doesn't believe in using starting fluid on diesels. I would share some pictures, but I dont have any yet. I still have to haul it home, it's a couple hours away form me.

Congratulations on your purchase. The 1520 is a handy little tractor and once you find all the uses for the loader, you not ever want to be without one. Read the owner's manual thoroughly and that will help to avoid problems that may need the service manual but it is good to have when you encounter a problem

You will be very happy with your new tractor. Using starting fluid does not ruin a tractor. You just need to use it in moderation. I prefer to spray it into the air cleaner rather than direct inject it.A block heater is a better option but do not be afraid of a little starting fluid when you have to get going now in cold weather. Tom

I have had a tractor with a loader before, however it was a ford 2000 and its hydraulic pump just didn't put out the GPM as the new tractor does and it didn't handle big bales at all. The ford didn't have a independent PTO like this one does, I think that will be a game changer for me.

I agree that starting fluid used in moderation
does not harm an engine.
And in really cold weather is necessary.
We had a customer with an old 220 Cummins
that wouldn’t start at zero unless you held the
decompression lever about a third of the way
on to help speed up cranking, and give it a whiff
of ether and slowly release the decomp lever
as it started picking up cylinders.

I agree it's not starter fluid that bad it's the incorrect use of it. Most tractors such as the 1520 came from factory with a "cold weather starting aid" designed to limit the mount of starter fluid that engine can ingest via an orifice(key 16)

Most people such as my neighbor I witnessed yesterday prefer to the easier method of spraying starting fluid into air intake or filter housing. My neighbor sprayed starting fluid into air cleaner to keep engine running long enough to purge air from diesel fuel system. Every so often while neighbor was maintaining engine operating on starter fluid I could hear engine rattling from ingesting too much starting fluid. I drove off leaving neighbor to conquer his own fuel problems

Thank you for the information. I did actually see that diagram yesterday while looking thru the service manuals for the tractor. Interesting!

Nice, mine has a block heater too. When I checked it out it was in the low 40s and the engine hadn't been started in days. Barely 1 revolution of the engine and it fired up and ran great. I sure hope it is a good tractor since its replacement has turned out to be one problem after another. That one is getting its immediate problems fixed and sold!
