40 Alternator Ammeter Update

Ok with a voltage meter with the tractor at rest and switch off at the
battery I get 12.6. When running at medium to high idle I get a
reading of 14.5 at the battery and 14.6 at the one wire stud off the
alternator. So the alternator is charging. I have the ammeter hooked
up per the instructions from Agri-Service but am guessing I might
need to swap one wire from positive to negative post to make it read
correctly. Prior owner had cut out and removed the voltage regulator
and cutout, if there was one, and had a two wire alternator with
external ceramic resistor.

Congratulations and thanks for the update. Indeed 12.6 volts at rest and stabilized represents a full charged battery and that 14.5 volts indicates she's indeed being charged. If the ammeter is wired correct if you turn on lights and ignition engine not running it should swing over to - discharge but then running at fast RPM it should swing to + charge subject to RPM, battery state and voltage regulation. If it does opposite of that the the leads need reversed.

Switched the red from battery and the wire going to the light switch and it now shoes charging with lights on while running. I was hoping this was my issue but where I was following the wiring instructions felt confident I had it right to start. Also got my dash light working!

Thanks to all that replied.
