what is the story on these tractors? 4520/4620 deere
they both were only made for a few years, and they seem a lot lower priced than the 4320
are they basically the same,or just the 4620 is a newer model? or were there several changes?

what the good, bad and ugly of these? cabs good ? were they many made?

thanks

4520 had serious issues out the gate mostly with the engine. 4620 corrected them all. Both were kinda overbuilt for the horsepower they had.

I don't understand why people thing the engine in a 4520 was such a bad issue,, the crankshaft is the same as a 4020 or a 4430, the head is the same as a late 4020, the piston liners are the same as the other tractors too...I have one here in the shop now that has sat, out side for near 25 years with spun main bearings,, I just finished my part which is to make it ride and drive. It is like a heavy 4320, supper strong front axle, 1,000 RPM only shaft, and it has a front PTO, which seems odd.

4520's had some problems when they were new. IIRC main problems were engine & fuel system. Some 4520's had engines replaced under warranty. I have no experience with 4620's as I don't remember a 4620 being sold in my area

The air filter system caused engine failures and I think 4520s to start with used the same pump as the 4020s which didn’t hold up when used on the 4520. JD had a program to replace engines in 4520s with 4620 engines right after the 4620 hit the market. Plus, they were only made for 2 years, and finally I don’t have the sales numbers in front of me but they took a nose dive after the first year due to all the issues sort of like the IH 560 debacle. The 4520 was JD’s first in house turbo tractor and it was sort of a miss. 4620 fixed all of that.

A 4620 will walk all over 5010/5020. Different story though with a 4620 vs a dialed up 6030.

I have a late 141hp 5020 and a 136hp 4620. To me, the 5020 is quite strong, without extra weights, that thing is snappy even compared to a 4020, and the 5020 can do 1.5 times more work compared to a 4020.
The 4620 has been turned up some, it has about same horsepower than a 5020 in the field. Being lighter, it needs more weights. The 4620 absolutely needs to be at over 1500 before dropping a chisel p'ow or you will pull on the powershift lever. The 5020 can operate the chisel plow at 1600 rpms all day.

The 4620 is my favorite tractor, the hood has perfect proportions, nice front axle, side console, etc...
I like the 5020 but it is not as nice as the 4620. If I needed to have only one 20 series, the 4620 would stay.

I think the problem was that tiny excuse from an injection pump. I machined an adapter to put a 4020 style pump on it and brought it to life. With the old pump the 4320 would out pull it. The one I have now I put the motor out of my old 7700 in it.
