2040 Front end loader

Hello, new to the group. I have a 3 cyl 2040. Looking for a front end loader for it. In my searching a 143 146 148 520 175 will fit. Am I confused on these or missing any jd models? I'm not even sure what hydraulic I have
Has anyone fit a other brand "easily" without serious fab work? I'm not really wanting a project.
Thanks
Phil

You can add the 145 to your list. You could also add a 47 which is older but you need to make sure it came off a 1020 or 1520 as you need the three cylinder brackets. Where are you located? I have a nice 145 that I might sell. I am in sw WI. Tom

It's ironic but gp83 listed model 145 in his other post. IIRC JD model 37 FEL will also fit a JD 3 cyl powered tractor

I replied to your same question on Implement Alley. IMHO multiple questions on same items confuses site members
It was suggested I take the same question and post it here👍

Sorry I became aware of that after I posted here. But as you'll discover 2 threads on same topic is confusing especially to "old codgers" similar to me. LOL

Yup, you asked a John Deere specific question. And theres lots of John Deere knowledge here in the "John Deere" section. I dont understand the confusion

Tx Jim I left the 37 out because it really was not much of a loader. No down pressure and not a great bucket either. There were also brackets to put a 37 on the 2020's and also 2510's. A model 48 would also work if he can find utility brackets. Tom

I dont understand the confusion

I'll give you 2 examples of dual posting confusion.

In the similar post on Implement Ally gapfast83 listed model 145 but not on this thread, He also listed his 2040 was an '83 which is incorrect because 2040 manufacturing was stopped in '82 BUT that would indicate 2040 was built after '78 so it would NOT have the small open center hyd pump that b&d posted a photo of DUE TO THE FACT that b&d evidently was unaware gapfast83 2040 was a late model.

I'm probably in the minority BUT dual posts about same subject are confusing to to this old codger for those & other reasons

What serial number 2040 ? Open or closed centre hydraulics .

Due to the fact the OP stated on another thread that his 2040 was an '83 then the serial# would have to be after >419145 with closed center hyd's

I did not look at all the different posts that were made hippy hoppy all over the ytmag site .

Please read the previous post I made attempting to explain to JDIH how duplicate posts cause confusion for some members especially old codgers similar to ME.

I am guilty. I am on another forum, been around some for a while but dont slide over to tractor forums regular. It takes a little to figure out which regulars read what. I did take the time and read back a couple hours of highlights that tend to interest me.

Jim, Im sorry my other post has upset you this much. I was just trying to get the most feedback possible. Like I stated it was suggested I posted here. My serial # is 434756. If you will go back to the other post that you repeatedly bring up, where i stated 1983.... you will notice I added some question marks. Not a tractor guy or implement guy. Just wanting a Loader for my 2040.

I'm not upset in any way, shape or form.

If I stated something to indicate it or if I upset you it was unintentional.

I strive for information on tractors & equipment to be correct as possible.

perfect. Then lets move fwd with current topic of find me a loader!!haha
found a 401 loader pretty close to me. Seems they came off a idustrial version of a 2020. Why wouldnt that fit??

Didnt mean to submit that quite yet. Seems the 146 loader is the "ideal" loader for my machine. Found one but its at 3,000$!!! Seems steep, but what do i know.

I think from viewing parts catalog that the FEL you referred to should fit your tractor. Does your tractor have side frames? If not the side
frames should be installed.

If there wasnt some razzing or pokes back and forth in jest here and there . We would all be wondering what happened .

There is the loader and then there are the mounts .
I have no idea why so many people take the loader off the tractor , leaving the mounting brackets on the tractor . And they sell the loader only which is useless without the mounts .

Are you on a budget? Have you priced a new loader from westendorf or koyker or Deere? My FIL has a 2040 and he has a John Deere 521 loader on it. The loader is probably 30 years newer than the tractor.

If you are looking for one on a budget be SURE that the brackets fit your tractor. Those loaders you mention can fit dozens of models and you can bet the brackets will not fit a 2040 if you buy one unsure of what it fits.

Frankly, unless you load the back like crazy, a 2040 doesnt make a great loader tractor for more than light work. I have had FILs 2040 here to use for loading hay, and its just too light for 5x6 round bales.

That 146 should fit your 2040 just fine. I suggest to unbolt mounting brackets from loader masts. Mount brackets to your tractor then set loader on brackets & install the 4 bolts on each side. If your 2040 has a roll-gard then the mounting bracket tubes are a little more difficult to mount but can be accomplished. I've mounted several new/used FEL's in yrs past.

Good deal. Would i need new fittings? Is it complicated to plumb to tractor?

Hyd fittings required will depend on fittings on loader hoses plus which hyd fittings your tractor has or doesn't have. Does your tractor have a ported hyd filter cover as pictured below? Also shown below is photo of FEL hyd attachment to tractor.

it does not.....

What is the difference between a 145 and 146 loader?
Found a few 145 significantly closer to me than the 146

Mounting brackets on 145 don't extend to rear axle similar to some 146 mounting brackets & 145 is not as heavy built. Back when I was employed by a JD dealer I've mounted/sold/supervised mounting many more model 145 FEL's on JD utility tractors than 146 FEL's. Model 145 FEL will be fine for most farm loader applications.

Has JD ever published a tractor/loader "compatibility" chart? I have 145 on my 2020...really like it. If I ever get another model tractor, I've pondered the possibility of moving the loader over. It would be nice to know all the possible combinations.

I'm not aware of a tractor/loader compatibility chart but that question has been asked/discussed many times on tractor/equip discussion forums. Model 145 loader will fit many different JD 20 through 55 model JD utility tractors

Finally getting time to get back to a project or two. I had found this 145 loader for sale.

I think Jim has already touched on it, but I'm still researching what all would be needed to get it plumbed in. I have no rear remotes, and couldnt even tell you where to tie into. :(

Pressure for FEL control valve should originate at the rear of pressure control valve on RH side of tractor close to hyd filter cover. This is accomplished by replacing fitting(item 4 1st photo) with a tee fitting(2nd photo. Return hose from FEL valve should attach to ported hyd filter cover

If you tractor doesn't have a hyd ported filter cover JD offers 2 different styles. Here is the part #(L55982) of the cheaper version that IMHO is just as good as the higher $$$$ cover.

What are the side rails? I doubt I have those

i went to local salvage place to look for some frame rails. To confirm this is where the rail mounts?

Is it just 1/2 plate mounted where I have it circled?

Getting some time here and there. I picked this loader up at auction. It s labeled 145, but after your description of the 145vs146 I m not really sure what I have.
My hydraulic control valve doesn t have anything plumbed into it. Just a nut in the bottom.

It appears you have a 145 loader & 146 mounting brackets. You need a 2 spool control valve configured for closed-center hyd's for loader control

I would need a 13.5 gpm valve. I would like to use a joystick since im starting from scratch. That's doable right?
