JD 4020 LP Cuts Out After 45 Minutes Of Use

I am working on a JD 4020 LP. We installed electronic ignition, used resistor plugs (gapped at .015) resistor plug wires, rewired the tractor, tried 2 new coils, new ballast resistor (because someone put a different ignition switch on the tractor without the built in resistor), cleaned the fuel filter and still cannot get it to run right. The tractor starts fine but after about 45 minutes it starts cutting out and sometimes dies. We took the electronic ignition out and replaced with new points and condenser and had the same issue. We re-installed the electronic ignition. Earlier new valves were put on the tank. An alternator kit was put on the tractor so it has plenty of charge.

Any thoughts on what is causing the tractor to cut out and miss after about 45 minutes?

Back in the sixties my Dad had an old Chevy truck. Same symptoms as your tractor. Turned out to be little wire to side of distributor body. Was frayed and when warm had too much resistance. Hope you find your problem.

How about the solenoid on the fuel valve? Is it getting hot? Do you still have fuel flowing out when it stops running?

We had a 50 LP that would that and I remember my Dad would crack the liquid valve open an it would run fine, He never ran the tractor on liquid vapor only. I have had several LP John Deere and I still run them on vapor only. I did have one that did that and found that my brother had switch it to liquid and it would freeze up in the regulator and run rough, anyway I installed a new regulator and all is fine. Good Luck

had a 530Lp, would start, run fine for about 30 minutes and then would turn off. Problem fixed when I
changed the condenser.
