JD 40 Hard to Hand Crank

Why is my jd 40 so hard to turn over with the hand crank? I would think such a small engine with only 6.5 compression would be easy. I am pretty strong but it takes everything I have to turn it over with the hand crank.
Also I am missing some of the hood fasteners, are they easy to find and install?

Post back when you find out why it cranks hard. No compression release on that engine.
Make sure the crank is not binding where it goes through the front sheet metal.

Loosen the set screw on the right side of the starter and pull it back so it disengages. If you can hand crank easily then the starter may be binding up on the ring gear.

Years ago at Christmas time I found a reproduction Factory hand crank for Father's 40.
We all trouped out to the freeing cold shed where the tractors had been parked since October.
My Father was seated n the tractor . While I was kneeling down in front of the 40 and had just about made one slow cautious turn of the crank. To check for fit and clearance while trying not to scratch the paint.
Without warning there was putt and a snort and the d@m thing was running . Without my knowledge Father had pulled the choke on and turned the ignition switch on.
It doesn't take much to start a gas Dubuque that is in tune .

Yup I agree on the easy start function.....the M here will usually take off on 180 degrees of crankshaft rotation

Sharps has the best price on fasteners. They have them in a set. Listed on eBay. Sundahl makes a little tool that makes installing the pins easy. Also on eBay.

Shouldn't be that hard to turn. You are pulling up with an open hand?

I would remove the spark plugs and try to turn it with the crank. It should be real easy, if not then you have something binding like the starter like was mentioned or the crank itself.
