New to site, new to me JD 1630

Hello all. New to the site.
Before I begin, I will be visiting my local JD dealer to buy the shop and owners manual for my tractor.
I believe it is a 1977 Deere 1630. Looks as though it was never a model in the US. Canada and Europe.
I have a few things to fix up, but over all it's beautiful.

Hopefully someone can help me out. It has the 4-8 transmission, no hi-lo. No parking brake, but no parking gear either. At least, it's not letting me put it in park. Is there something i can check to see if it has a parking gear?

I can't see anywhere there would be a parking brake lever even...except maybe a small hole with a plug on it.

Any ideas?
Thank you in advance.

I've got lots more questions! hydraulic remotes and the like. But i'll save that for later.

1630 should have a parking brake lever on rh side. Check JD parts. This was built in Mannheim.
European road regulation requires an emergency brake system that works in case of lack of oil.
Hence the parking brakes installed on waterloo Tractors and so on...

If your tractor has park one needs to move RH gearshift lever in position to select 1 of the numbered gears then attempt to put LH lever in "P". Handle for handbrake if present would be located on LH side when operator is seated in seat. Handle & hand brake parts lists no serial break in 1630 parts catalog that I can locate. Decal with & without handbrake are shown in PC. Both shift decals with & without handbrake are listed in 1630 PC

I have ran 3 different 1630's my dad had one as did 2 of his brothers. They all had the transmission park like TxJim showed and no parking brake.

Thanks for the replies.

Hopefully i've got this picture thing out of the way now.

I have tried everything i can think of to get the transmission (left selector(H-L-R-P)) into park.... clutch in, clutch out, in gear, out of gear.

I'll have to try again.... so in gear, and then over into the park position...

I don't really want to tear the top off the transmission...but i have to assume something is buggered up in there.

To place in park, you absolutely need to put a gear on. It sounds better to use first gear to reduce strain on park mecasism.
You do no need to clutch. Sometimes, tractor needs to roll a little to go in park. If ground is flat, changing gear usually allows you to put it in park.

I had no clue than 1630 were available in USA new. Maybe trough Canada? The US model at that time was called a 2240.

Thank you. I'll definitely try it tomorrow. I am located in Ontario Canada.

From all the ID plates, looks like
Frame = Germany
Motor = France
Loader = Canada
ROPS/Canopy = USA (approved for 2550, 2750)

Thank you all for the prompt responses.

JD utilty tractor operators had so much difficulty putting some model utility tractors into "park" that JD engineers designed the following "park lock assurance kit" which most tractor operators I was around disliked the kit. The kit did make it easier to get tractor in park.

I think the kit is more to make sure the operator put the tractor in first gear and the lever stay engaged while operator jumps off the tractor and pull lever inadvertently with his jeans. I am almost sure that Deere lost lawsuit after someone got ran over while getting off and made this helacious kit.

Major issue with the park is that there is no power release like on 4020. So good luck to remove it with a huge trailer pushing it.
I have a 2020 with park lock but I have installed also a parking brake. Much safer with 5 years old boys playing on it while I chain up something.

Welcome to the site from another Ontsrio
resident....Huron County area. Those
tractors were built in Germany based on
the Dubuque design with some changes made
for the Canadian market. Early models were
like yours, with no parking brake, but a
park position on the trans. Perhaps those
with hi-lo and independent PTO were
equipped with a parking brake. Yours
appears to have a 2 stage clutch. Great
utility tractor and a great loader tractor.
Yours appears to be in great condition.
Keep it well maintained and you can get
over 10k trouble free hours from it.

Where abouts are you in Ontario ?

Not sure i understand how that park assurance kit works. I guess if I can use it reliably, i would be fine. My entire property is pretty much hill...so I definitely needed a way to park or have a parking brake.. more than just downpressure on the bucket :)

I got the tractor into park today. Took a bit to figure it out though. I put the gear selector into 1st gear, and the range selector into P. That didn't work. I had the bucket resting on the ground.
I lifted the bucket, and low and behold....the selector slid into P. Just that small amount of movement allowed PARK to be selected. Similar to what (ftd860) said. tried it numerous times....worked every time.

Thank you all.

Centash - I'm in Flamborough (part of Hamilton, but i'm close by African Lion Safari). I bought it from a family friend from north of London who collects and restores John Deere's. He got about 15...most of those his wife knows about :). He thought it was a '77, has owned it since 2007 and has periodically done things to it... He only ran it for about 6 hours per year with a splitter on the back of it. Newly rebuilt injector pump, new brakes, new clamshell fenders, looks like new hood, painted. all new fluids and filters, rebuilt remote (still leaks). There's only a few things i need to fix. the tach doesn't work, the flashers don't work (light up, but don't flash) and the remote leaks..... that's about it as far as i can tell.
Just cut a small field with the haybine this evening and it ran wonderfully.

Too bad that Deere shutdown the Welland Ontario manufacturing facility.
The 14 yr old kids getting themselves killed on the Gator on "take your kids to work day" was difficult .

Where is the loader supply oil connected to the tractor ? Where does the loader oil return back into the tractor ?
This would be the time to use one of those PH test kits for engine coolant . To measure the corrosion inhibitor .

It also has a quick attach bucket and pallet forks from Smyth Welding. Up in Auburn near you... I don't even need to get off the tractor to change fel attachments. I need to get a bale spear for it now.

Just to see if the coolant needs replacing?

both lines connect to the right side under the 3ph lever. i don't have a good pic at the moment. you can see the lines in the few i have.

to clarify. it's the rear remote that is leaking.

Centash - how can you tell its a 2 stage clutch... i think it is... never verified. My David Brown is a two stage, but it's VERY obvious when pressing it down.

It appears from viewing your photo's of your tractor that you're correct in that your tractor has dual stage pto clutch proven by the """lack of a pto control lever""" between gear shift levers.

mvphoto62090.png

Also loader control valve hyd hoses are attached to tractor by the method that b&d was inquiring about.

I was just down Highway 6 to Burlington a few weeks ago. For the Counter protest vs " New Wave Activists" and Toronto Pig Save" . At the gates into Sofia/Fearman's hog processing facility. What a bunch of freaks, malcontents and narcissists .
A lot of folks get the Smyth Welding shop and Helm's welding shop mixed up as they are only a few miles apart.
Going to need chains on those rear tires for winter.

As Txjim says, an independent pto would have a yellow handle between the shift
levers.
Just a word about the Smyth quick attach plate...I have used them on various
loaders for years with no issues, but....be absolutely sure that the two pins on
the plate FULLY extend into the slots on your bucket...if they are not fully in and
if the bucket is jerked around with the loader fully raised, it could be come
dislodged. Just a common sense thing, keep them lubes up and they will slide in
without having to manually push on the lever the spring is hooked onto.

Looks like a really sharp and well kept unit, good for many miles and smiles. Enjoy
and stay safe!
