clutch/ transmission Late model JD B

Just bought a late model JD B. Drove it 3 miles to pressure wash at the dairy and one time the tractor "seemingly" slipped into neutral. Clutch was still engaged, transmission in 6th. I thought it either slipped out of gear or the clutch somehow disengaged. But no, clutch still solidly engaged and when I tried other gears, none of them worked either when I put in gear and engaged clutch. I tried the PTO lever and yes PTO turned as it should. I then put back in reverse, I think it was, and it worked normal. Tried other gears and everything worked normal. I did my pressure washing and then drove the three miles back home without any more issues. WHAT DO YOU THINK COULD HAVE HAPPENED????

Behind the flywheel cover you can see a smaller cover that covers the 4th & 6th gears. Remove the cover and check for a loose bearing here.

Late enough to have a single shifter or still have high/low and it jumped out of high

With high/low it will slide to low range when you move to reverse

Thanks for responding. This is my "winter" project and will certainly check that out. Just getting the dirt and grime removed last night was a chore. I would guess this tractor had all of the original grease/dust/grime on it yet. Will be a fun project.

And remember even a single stick makes the high low shift when it goes across the bottom go gently, But I know you knew that.

Most likely the problem is the detent plunger and shift rail. B's had a real issue with misfit of plunger into notch in shift rail. I have reworked 2, one tractor is used with Woods mower and it has never slipped out of gear. I did the hi notch a little too deep and it takes a real kick on lever to get it out of gear. When you get the plunger and rail out and set the parts together, you will see how poor the fit is. I have some lousy pix of before and after of the last one I did. email me if you want to see them. Archives may get more on this as it has been discussed before. Email should be open

A washer under the detent spring is a good bandaid. On a single stick B is that detent under a cap just to the left of the shift quadrant or am I thinking of another model?
