I’m rebuilding the engine on my 510 (152 diesel engine). In looking I
found the rear oil seal (T20326) is $450!!! Does anyone know where I
can get one for less money?
Thanks

If you find a later rear housing in junk yard you then can replace seal with later type AR92893 which can be purchased aftermarket for around $40.00. The later seal is a much better seal and allot less risk of damaging it when installing. Later seal used on many Dubuque and Saran built John Deere engines. DW

I ran into this on a very early 2510 over 25 years ago. I had a machine shop that put my rear plate in a lathe and machined it to fit the later style seal. Not sure where they found the specs but they had done it before. Tom

My machine shop didn’t seem to know about that. Do you know where I could find the specs to give to them?
Thanks!

The shop that did it is no longer in business. If you have a good machine shop could you buy the late style seal and have them measure off it and machine the housing? Tom

(quoted from post at 21:13:08 09/10/20) Do you know the part number on the later style rear housing?
Thanks!!

Due to the fact that a JD 510 has a unique clutch housing compared to normal JD utility tractors of that era I wonder if an alternative flywheel housing will fit. I attempted to research T22068 flywheel housing & T23596 gasket but failed to come up with a match.

Your right. I also forgot the diesel tank mounts on the flywheel
housing, most of the other JDs of that time it’s in the front. Do you
see any reason why machining the housing I have, to install the later
style seal (like Tom said), wouldn't work?
Thanks

Looking at mine I see the face of seal still looks smooth. I think what's leaking is the inside seal to the shaft To remove the old seal bend the three tabs down on the shaft that were bent up just a smidgen. This was to hold the seal in place during the assembly . Off comes the seal and the spring that pushes the seal into the face. The rubber has gone bad on mine. I think a size -350 o-ring will do the trick. Note: the thee tabs on the shaft are not the three that in gauge the seal to the engine. I am saying this while waiting for ebay. Two o-rings for under $10.
