John Deere #5 sickle

We are looking at buying a number 5 sickle. From the pictures Ive seen it appears to have a hydraulic cylinder for the lift. At our tractor show just last week a saw one that was mechanical lift. Is it possible to convert this to mechanical? We have two model Bs that only have power lift not powertrol and we use a pull type sickle. This number 5 would work out better except for the lift. If anyone has any input it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

They made numerous types of lifts for those mowers, as they could be made to work on every brand of tractor that was being manufactured at the time. If you get a set of books for it you will be able to see the different set ups that were available. Then it's just a matter of locating the parts you need.

Yes.

Take a look at the illustrations below.

Compare the mower that you are considering with the parts shown above.

Another added lift feature is the foot lever.

Both will improve the manual mechanical lifting.

Hope this helps.

Thank you guys for all the good info. Unfortunately we missed out and it already sold. Im gonna keep my eye out for another one.

James,
Brother, is that, a, gasp, BLUE tractor behind the B in your picture?
Please, for the love of all that is good, tell me it belongs to a lesser informed neighbor....

:) Bob

I think the one we used when I was a kid had a PTO shield and I remember having a hard time raising the sickle with one leg. I think the neighbor still has the unstyled B and mower and I do not remember ever seeing that tractor without the mower attached. We even referred to it as the mower tractor.

The first no. 5 I had did not have the PTO shield on it. I ran it that way for quite a few years-perfectly safely, I might add. When that mower got damaged I bought another one to replace it. This one has the shield on it, so now I use the full length shield, as per James' picture.

GwLung, what part of the country are you from I have a newly restored complete # 5 mower with guards, 2 knives,2 pitmans

Were in southeast Ohio

The onlt thing a power troll willmdo that a power lift will not do is stop the lifting halfway up for cleaning out cutter bar or working on it Powe lift is full up or down, no middle position like power troll.

Ok guys good news! The number 5 sickle I was looking in to buying well the buyer was a no show so were supposed to pick it up lithos week. We plan on using this on my sons small start up farm with our John Deere Bs. Right now we use an old pull type New Idea 251 sickle. This number 5 still has the mechanical lift levers plus a remote cylinder. If I cant make out power lift run the hydraulic cylinder does anyone know where I can get the foot lever and linkage like in the pictures shared on this thread?
