51 B Electric Start Mechanism Problem

I have a 51 B with electric start. Has anyone ever had a problem before with the starter linkage not sufficiently engaging the switch on the starter? The starter and starter switch are recently replaced, so I know there is no issue there. The problem is that when you press the push button down, it will bottom out on the flywheel cover before engaging the starter. It did not seem to do this when the flywheel cover was off, maybe there is an interference between the linkage and the flywheel cover?

Just wondering if anyone has run into this issue before or has any advice.

There is some adjustment down where the rod screws into yoke ( not sure if that is proper term ? ) that goes around the starter.

Agree with [b:654c4848f0]Mike M[/b:654c4848f0] on adjusting the yoke.

Take a look at the diagram below.

Note the rod (Key 52), jam nut (Key 56), and yoke (Key 63).

Loosen the jam nut and turn it all the way to the top of the threads on the rod.

Adjust the yoke towards the top of the rod until until it no longer bottoms out on the flywheel cover.

Hope this helps.

Same issue I had on my 50, adjust the linkage normally will do the trick. I also used some jb weld with 2 nickels on the starter button to take up the slack, cheap swamp yankee fix, when I put on a new starter button a few years back didnt need the nickels, ha

Thank you for the information. After playing around with the linkage, I could not get it to turn over consistently. Once I confirmed by getting under the tractor that the linkage was indeed depressing the starter button completely, I took the starter button off. It looked to me like the contacts were burned and the plastic keeper that holds the contact in place on the starter button had broken.

When I had this starter rebuilt two years ago the guy replaced the starter button. Are they all this crappy, or is there a better quality starter button available that will last longer?
