4020 PTO noise

On my 1965 dls power shift there is a clunking noise when PTO is on. Nothing hooked on tractor. I think it may be from near the front PTO. I have looked at the diagram in the book and don't see what it could be. I was round baling when what ever it is broke. The PTO still spins and also stops. Should I take the front PTO cover off and see what I can find out there? I am hoping I can not have to spilt the tractor. Thanks

I had to replace the rear bearing on the PTO a few years ago on my 1965 JD4020 powershift for the same reason.

I was looking in my book and maybe I
just am not getting it but can I
replace it without splitting the
tractor? I am looking in my big 4000
series service manual. Is that where
your diagram came from or is it Jd
parts? Can I replace the bearing right
from taking apart the back PTO cover.
I am sure I don't have the technical
name for it right. I have never done
anything to the PTO never even switch
the different shafts. So I am trying
to learn how it all works. I have
split the tractor before but never had
to go into the tranny.

The rear bearings and idler can be serviced without a split, if you have been swapping 540/1,000 shafts its possable that the bearing race came off the end of the shaft this will let the 540 shaft wobble.

I changed the rear bearing and it still makes the same sound. I think the PTO break is starting to go because it doesn't always stop the PTO. Can that make a noise when it is failing?
