2440 coolant in oil

Neighbor has a JD 2440 and it got hot and when he stopped and checked--it has water in oil. Does not miss some white smoke out of exhaust. Runs good just water in oil. What could be problem-- we were thinking head or sleeve o-ring? Anyone had this problem? Thanks for any help.

It appears from viewing both 2440 parts catalogs that neither model 2440 has an engine oil cooler. My next guess for coolant in crankcase would be failed liner or sealing o-ring or both. My JD 4255 with same symptoms had failed liner o-rings but good liners.

Coolant loses corrosion resistant properties over time. The cooling system is not oversized on the 2440 either. Couple that with years of corrosion inside the radiator causing low flow which can lead to excessive heat. This can lead to cavitation of the coolant. Basically the coolant can boil on the backside of the sleeves and it can cause pitting in the sleeves over the years. Hopefully you find the culprit. They are good old tractors.

I just did pistons and sleeves in a 2440. Really not that bad of a job. Pull the oil pan and pressurize the cooling system. If it's a sleeve leaking you'll see it.
