JD 1020-gas Temperature gauge replacement-what''s invovled?

Hello JD Experts,
Did several searches for the subject posts, to no avail.
My 1020 gas JD doesn't register any movement when operated.
I have concluded that the temp. gauge (what appears to be a combined gauge/sending unit) is defective.
Checked my OEM JD manual, also nothing i could find that describes the process.

Also, it may be worth considering getting an electric unit to replace what appears to be the mechanical gauge, but sometimes these types may present a reliability problem-- the experts thoughts are requested.

I can trace the single line (appears to be mechanical) leaving the gauge but without removing the top cover can't see where it goes to get to the sensor location.

Can anyone provide the steps need to change the temp. gauge out, and their thoughts of replacing w/ an electric unit and sensor?

I replaced the temp gauge on my 66 1020 with one from Autozone. IIRC it was about $23.00, and came with adapters for several different sizes. As far as the steps involved, remove the hood, remove the left side battery box and lid, remove the temp sensor from the head, and gauge from the dash. Install in the reverse order. Not a hard job at all, but the hood will need to be removed to allow access to the sending unit. Plan on loosing a little anti-freeze if you don't drain the radiator a little. I went back with a mechanical gauge, just my preference. Hope this helps.

thanks very much for your excellent and concise instructions on how to complete. I to prefer the mechanical due to previous experiences with some of the electrical sending unit types.
