JD 520 Gas line

My 520 starts and runs fine for a minute or so then shuts down. There is gas flow going into the carb but very little goes out the bottom of the float bowl when I remove the plug at the bottom. I suspect there is a filter inside the entrance to the carb since there is a large nut there that looks like it could house a filter inside. Any other ideas?

As per JD parts Catalog PC-527-

Thanks, that is the plug I noticed. I will try to remove it without getting more dirt into the carb. Where did you get that diagram? I wish I had one on my computer and lots of others would also I am sure. Could you email me one? [email protected].

If the plug is filled with dirt, how do you remove it without allowing dirt to enter the carb I wonder? I don't want to allow any dirt to go further into the system!

That will be a challenge. when I bought my 70 in Jan 2019 it started but ran terrible. I just pulled the carb and planned to do a "rebuild". I am a novice at this, but grew up on a farm and willing to try to fix most anything if i have a manual/you tube video. Steiner had a good one. So the first thing i did when i got on bench was pull that screen. Wow, it was disgusting to say the least! The screen was actually destroyed allowing rust/gunk to get to carb. I found a new screen at New Paris Tractor parts in Indiana. Did the cleaning/rebuild and it runs like a charm!! Good luck.

I forgot to attach the link to the entire parts manual. Can find on line. I just printed the whole thing and put in a binder for my restoration project.

Your photos are great....my screen is in good shape though. I removed
the big nut at the bottom of the float bowl and removed the bowl itself
and it was not very dirty. Still the fuel flow is only a dribble while
the flow to the carb from the tank is great. I moved what I thought was
the float up and down but that had no affect on the flow coming into the
bowl.
I just do not know where the blockage is and I doubt it is a small
passage that is the problem since usually the entrance to a fuel bowl is
a needle and seat which is quite large by comparison.

not sure if you can spray anything in there to open the port without removing the carb. You may just need to do a rebuild. Even if you get to flow out bowl, may have plugged ports. Here is the video i watched to do mine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUp9URvm6eY

the rebuild kit from Steiner comes with instructions. I also had previously purchased the John Deere Carburetor Service manual. I also had the Green Magazine May 2018 article "Duplex Carburetor" rebuild article with great pictures to help.

I am willing to scan and send anything you want/need.
