Running JD 730 es diesel, ROM, am 3 pt. $5720, JD 70 diesel, pony start, ROM,fenders, p/s , lpto non- runner (supposedly stuck piston rings) $3190 , Running JD 50 ROM, 45 loader, p/s, ROM $1240, Running JD 70 gas no p/s, 45 loader ROM $2585. This was an estate sale so not sure if family members were buying any of the tractors. Surprised what the 70 diesel brought in light of it’s condition (?????)

blksmok,

Was this a live (normal) auction or online only bidding auction? Since returning to Ohio this spring I have not been to a single auction but have followed some online and was surprised by what I saw. Several of my favorite auctioneers are going online only.

Dan....it was an online only auction. Almost all of the auctioneers in our area have gone in that direction. They get many more bidders from a wider geographical area and is actually less work for them, no need to go to auctioneering school. They almost all charge a 10% buyer’s fee on top of the final bid. This new system generally eliminates the possibility of “getting a good deal” at an auction. Everything seems to bring a fair market price regardless of being a remote location or bad weather that day.

Ron...the 730 diesel was a hobby restoration, but nice shape. The 70 gas, 50 gas and 70 diesel looked to be all original including the paint.

Dave....I thought the 730 es diesel would bring more as it was in good shape. The 70 gas w/o power steering and a loader was about right IMHO. Don’t like loader tractors w/o ps though. The 50 gas with loader and ps should have brought more. Might have brought more if the loader was removed(???)
The 70 diesel was inspected by a JD mechanic who was hired to get all of the tractors started. He said the 70 diesel was initially “stuck”, but they got it loose but could not get it to run. He thought it would not start due to low compression from stuck rings. Dunno. It could have been a stuck rack on the injection pumps, plugged fuel filters, air in the lines or several other possible causes. I thought it was worth about $1800 given all of the uncertainties. I collect 70 diesels and they can quickly become a money pit if the problem(s) are one step above simple. Not hearing it run eliminates the possibility to check for engine noises (loose flywheel) or transmission noises ( 3rd gear). I put in 16 bids on it, but the winning bidder only placed 1 bid. Might mean a family member wanted it even if the bids went beyond what the fair market price should be. To get the bid you would have had to chase it beyond $3000 plus the 10% buyer’s fee. You can buy a running 70 diesel with a factory wfe in that price range, plus you can check out the engine, transmission, live pto, power steering ,charging system etc. If it was “grandpa’s 70 diesel” the economics are not important...I guess.
