4010 Gear Shift

I have a John Deere 4010 snycro shift. It seems to shift into all gears decently but will not shift into second gear and 8th gear sometimes you shift it and it grinds but if you take it out of gear and pull the shifter back hard and quick it goes into gear. Some of the other gears you have to do this with sometimes but 2nd gear will not shift at all and 8th will go in if work with it. IS there a linkage the needs adjusted or is this a transmission problem and if it is a transmission problem do you have to split the tractor. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

Will the whole transmission eventually go bad or will it just be those two gears that wont work. I cut hay and bale with the tractor.
Thanks

I have a 4010 and had issues with getting into a couple gears too. Part of it was in the shifter mechanisms as they get worn over time. You need to look at the shifter and use the adjusters to see if that helps or rebuild it to get out the slop. Years ago I was hauling silage on the road with a 4010 and screwed up a down shift from 8 to 6. That hosed the synchronizers and when I got to a stop sign I could not shift to any gears. Had to get towed back to the farm and get the synchronizer rebuilt.

So first make adjustments to the shift linkages and fix where you have slop. A split may be required if that doesn't fix the issue but you can verify that first by taking off the platform and the top transmission cover to see what is (or isn't) moving in the transmission while shifting.

Adjust the linkage first . Guy I worked for has a 5020 and it was terrible to shift doing the same thing your tractor is but in every gear the linkage was way way out of adjustment I put it back to spec and it’s like new again

2nd and 8th seems like An odd combination to lose. 1st 2nd
4th and 6th are low side gears. Sounds like linkage. Is the
latching mechanism working correctly.

I would start with the latch in the gear shift, then build the shift lever up with weld if worn real bad then check clevis and pins as well as rods. Next would be how wore are the shifter arms are and finally I like to throw away the detent pointers in the trans and replace them with the ball and retainer (used on the late 30 series and newer) as well as new springs. I can take a fairly worn trans and make it decent. Your second and eighth makes me think it is linkage and not trans. I just did a 4010 that had the casting broke off where the gear shift latch went. They had a bolt that was very sloppy. Tom
