Smoking exhaust

Have John Deere model a put different fan shaft assembly on it. Smokes awful and slow to pick up some. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you have it apart far enough to get the camshaft out of time ?
Any restrictions along any portion of the air inlet , filter and carb ?

What year is it? Later ones had a vent
pump that could cause problems.

Same thing happened on my 70. Discovered there are two different gaskets for vent pump. The wrong one will let pressurized oil to be pushed down the vent tube directly into intake.
