Old hay guy

New User
Hello, long time follower, first time
poster.

My 2550 has been a tough tractor up until
a couple weeks ago. It started with the
PTO not disengaging when I push the lever
down, sometimes it would but mostly
wouldn't, it is the hydraulic pto. Then
yesterday I was cutting with the haybine
and I lost steering, brakes and rear
remote function. I turned it off let it
sit for maybe 10min, PTO still would turn
off but the other problems resolved, for
maybe 2 passes, then it they returned. I
changed the transmission/hydraulic filter
in hopes that was it, but of course it
wasn't. Any ideas on where to start with
this? I would like to finish haying lol.

Did you check/clean trans oi sump screen(key 30)? With 3pt raised, engine idling look in hyd filler hole behind seat for moving oil. Oil moving indicates leaking 3 pt hitch control valve seals. Does your tractor have a frt end loader?

Hello, Thank you for the reply, and diagram! I removed and cleaned the sump screen yesterday, it was extremely plugged, mostly with grasshoppers, i have no idea how they got inside. There was probably some
brake material there too, as they don't function quite like they used to either. After that the steering and remote function returned, but the PTO still wont turn off. I haven't looked to see if there is oil
spraying inside yet, Ill check later. Tractor does not have a loader.

Will low hyd pressure light come on under 1500 engine rpm's with pto engaged? My guess is no. If that is true pto brake hyd supply tube, tube seal or pto brake hyd seal is probably leaking.

Ill double check that tonight, however I also believe it doesn't. If so, how involved is the repair procedure for any one of your diagnosis?

I don't believe it has hydraulic high/low, it has 2 range shifter w/reverse and 4 gear shifter side by side, with the pto push/pull knob between the two.

My 1640 was making noises and illuminated the low transmission oil pressure light .
Found the two specialty
Orings were flat and hard from age causing the oil to bypass under the hydraulic control cover . The one gasket and two Orings were low cost .
Wont hurt to check, the Orings leaking or not . They are old .

(quoted from post at 12:37:11 07/13/20) Ill get a gasket and some O rings from Deere and check it out.

Thanks

It is a place to start and you could be lucky . Odds are however a service manual and a pressure testing setup will be required .
Every now and again an oil filter cover gasket gets drawn into the pump and valves . Totally messes everything up .

After checking, the light is on if PTO lever if down (off) @ 1500 and turns off if I pull the lever up (on). Then its comes back on if I drop RPMS. I ordered gaskets and o rings for the PTO valve body, Ill get them on Tuesday, take it off and clean it out. Ill let report back with (hopefully) positive results. Thanks!

I think pto brake hyd circuit is leaking. If you're very it will a faulty o-ring at the top where gear shift housing supplies oil to pto brake. Unlucky will faulty o-ring at other end of tube, failed tube or failed seal on brake drum which will require a "tractor split" to repair.

That sounds more like my theme, oh well bad luck is still luck lol. Ill let you know what i find tomorrow.

That whole relief and divert valve can be jammed . That will dump oil back into the transmission instead of up to the front pump .[/quote]

What relief valve are you referring to?

So I got the valve body off, cleaned up, o rings changed and put back together. While disassembling I noticed it had been apart before, perhaps my gpa had been in before, I don't know. But it was clean and everything looked good, but I replaced everything anyway and the problem persists. So I guess maybe this winter I might split it, and inspect formentioned problems.
