Dangerous hand clutch

recently my clutch on a 520 has been getting "jumpy" while in gear with the clutch handle in the center position. Yesterday I was pulling a wagon with passengers, and when I stopped and put the clutch to the center, all of a sudden it took off and I had no control of the handle. It resisted all input, forward and back. I almost hurt some folks. When I got back home, I could not stop it unless I turned off the switch. It has a mind of its own.
This morning I checked it out while not operating, and I can get it overcenter and back.

Any ideas before I start throwing money at parts that I may not need?

Thanks
Barry

B's 50's 520's and 530's don't have a inner race on the belt pulley bearing,, over time it wears into the crankshaft and will cause a very jumpy clutch. I have a way of repairing this,, but it so "Hill Billy" I don't want to discuss it on here,,,but it does work well..

Machine a sleeve and hold in place with Green Sleeve Locker ?

Something like this happened to me with my JD 530. What I found out is that I needed to read the operators manual and do my maintenance on my equipment better. Your clutch has a bearing in it that needs grease.

"put the clutch to the center". What exactly do mean by that phrase as there is no center to the clutch, it's either engaged (forward) or disengaged (rearward)

Park the tractor until you service the clutch.. Liability with people involved.. Could be a broken loose fiber disk as Mike said.. Pull clutch apart and check.. Next; if disks are good; pull pulley off crank and check the bearing if you can.. Bet bearing is seized, or dry about to sieze?? While pulley is off, service the dogs and toggles too. Check operating sleeve tab hole and its pin..

Growing up we were not allowed to let a JD set with the clutch disengaged for any period of time and certainly not get off the tractor with it in gear with just the clutch disengaged. It still bothers me to see this at shows and fairs. My grandfather would have had somebody by the ear. Shift to neutral and engage clutch then get off.

Even easier, throttle off quickly and pop them outta gear. The two bangers is shaking enough the transmission to make this very easy.

I have a B and a 60 both of witch have been jumpy at times I pull all the clutch facings out and take the glaze of by roughing them up, it does take the jumpy out.

Thanks to all the replies. First, Miangus & his father are correct about leaving it in gear while running. This is my 1st hand clutch tractor. When I bought it, my training was "pull back to put in gear, push forward to engage, and pull back if something goes wrong". That was it, now lesson learned.

What we found was only 2 of the 3 adjusting springs were compressing making it caddywhompus and grabbing the pulley housing.

So right now stuck in disassembly with removal bolts torqued down on the fixed clutch drive disk soaked with PB blaster to get it loose on the spline. When it breaks loose, I can replace all those dogs and bones, etc. I purchased over $400 in all new inner parts. I watch those repair videos and never see anyone with removal issues.

Once again, Thanks
