56 JD 50 frozen PTO help

Hi there, I have a 1956 JD model 50. I was headed out to bush hog with it and the PTO shaft is frozen and will not rotate. I helped my dad restore this tractor as a kid and we have not worked it very hard since other than towing a harrow and riding it around. Any insights on how to solve this would be appreciated. Ive got fields to mow and would like to use it. I thought I would ask before I jumped in and tore it down.
Thanks,
Erik

Does yours have the live pto option ? It will have a handle by the right side of the battery box. If so it has a brake and will not turn by hand when off. There is also another little lever that needs turned on down by your right toes. Move it to the left IIRC ? when the engine is off.

Everything Mike said.

I like to use an overrunning coupler when I'm running a bushhog type mower. It will make your PTO brake live a lot longer. A bushhog generates a lot of momentum for that little PTO brake to instantly stop. I learned this the hard way of course. I have two tractors with worn out PTO brakes from bushhogging.

Thanks! Yes it has the brake on the right side by the battery box. I need to verify this weekend which direction the lever is on the floor. If it still fails I will get back to this thread.

The lever on the RH side of the battery box is the lever that controls the live pto clutch pack. Up is on and down is off and brake applied. The lever down on the floor board by RH toes engages the gears in the tranny to turn the live pto on for operation. This lever is only to be moved with engine shut off as it actually moves gears. Sometimes people turn this off when not planning to use the pto to save wear and tear on the gears that turn all the time when it is on, or starting in cold weather with a weak battery as then you have less stuff to turn as you try and start it. If your lucky maybe someone just turned it off.
