I don't think there is a certain way and I don't find anything in a manual other than the rotors (gears) are to be replaced as matched sets.
 
If you're talking about the direction of rotation then yes there is a "certain way".
A pump is designed to pull oil from a sump and pressurize it to do some type of work. If you reverse the rotation it obviously won't work.

If that pump turns the wrong way he will have bigger problems happening. Issue with those will be that they are worn on the sides and lobes (plus wear in housing mating parts) and one of three things may occur due to differences in wear patterns, if they don't go back as they came out. 1. no change in capacity, 2. increase in capacity, or 3. loss of capacity. By capacity it could be pressure, volume or both. Worn gears, worn housing always a gamble.
 
Roy I think the gear housing if worse off. Lol and there big money. There is a 1/16 wear spot in the surface 😔
