1956 john deere 60 under rebuilding the 1st time since new, question i have is why the connection rod bolts dont have cotter keys thru the nuts like my JD B ? it does have some small slits in the nuts but no holes in the rod bolts and the slits are not big enought for cotter keys anyway. Any help would be appreciated.

Ron They are called Marsden nuts. Self-Locking nut. All the 2 cylinders I have torn down none of them had loosened where the cotter key was tight. My tractors I torque them down and let it go. If you are just past the cotter key hole you have to apply a lot more torque to get them lined up or try another nut. Now when I work on someones tractor I try and get the key hole lined up as good as I can and use cotter keys. Lynn
