Bushhog blade speed

I have a '55 JD 60 that i use for bushhogging. 1st gear sometimes seems too slow depending on thickness of brush, etc. But 2nd seems too fast at times also. I'm curious how the speed of the bushhog blade differs depending whether i'm in 1st gear or 2nd.

PTO speed and therefore bush hog blade speed stays consistent with engine rpm, blade speed does not change with changes of transmission gears.
Personally I can't imagine doing ANYTHING for very long in 1st gear of a JD 60. Worst day of my life was spent on a JD 60, longest day of my life too I think. Rotary hoeing 80 acres of 6-30" rows of soybeans. Could only run in 4th gear, 4-1/2 mph, could have maybe got going in 5th gear, 6.3 mph but would not have been able to make the turns on endrows. TEN HOURS I listened to that thing hammer away. Could have been done in half the time with one of his four 4020's.
