John Deere 70 clutch adjustment

I bought a John Deere 70 diesel this winter. The best part of the tractor is the engine. Starts and runs just as it should. Unfortunately it has been converted to electric start, but that works very well also. Been working on the battery cables, starter switch, batteries, and solenoid. Finished that today and now the tractor starts itself! Here is the problem today. I knew the clutch didn't have the snap it needed and today when taking the tractor down the road in 3rd or 4th it did slip on small hills. So, I tightened the clutch bolts a turn or two and got a good snap engaging and disengaging. The problem now is it is too tight and you can't stop the pulley to put it in gear. If you put the transmission in gear with the clutch out you can't start it without the tractor wanting to move. I did back it off a little bit and now it will start with the clutch disengaged and the tractor in gear, but it does put pressure on the gears enough that you can't take it out of gear. Does it just need to be disassembled and cleaned up along with replacing any worn parts? Appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

Sorry that did not work, try searching this site if you want but can be very frustrating to say the least. I have had to address this issue in the past, you may need to look at the parts cat. for the 70D as there are ser. no. breaks that may come into play.

2 complete turns at once is ALOT when making clutch adjustments. The castle nut design allows a sixth of a revolution adjustment. Get it close to where you like it then adjust all three nuts in or out a 6th of a turn at a time until you get it where you like. When you get it very close a 6th of a turn on just one or two of the nuts can put the icing on the cake. If you expect to get the clutch just how you like it, expect to adjust and test multiple times.
