Finally went to Napa the other day to pick up the condenser for my '50 MT. It's 6 volts. I asked the kid and he tried to look it up. He said there are several that fit my tractor. I told him I needed one for 6 volts with a generator. Long story short, I came home empty handed. I tried to find the JD part number to crosslist and came up with this one:

But it says it's for an alternator. Is this the right one? Thanks for all your help!
 
I don't think ignition condensers are voltage sensitive, but they need to be matched to the impedance of the coil, the one that came with the coil when it was new is the best one. Condensers don't wear out, it's a mistake to change them unless your sure they're bad.
 
Voltage or alternator/generator does not matter, get the distributor number and have them reference that.
 
I have no idea if that's the right one but I wouldn't bet the farm it is ?? Take a look at Steiners or Brillman etc or Mother Deere. The
capacitance value is fairly critical so you need the correct one for sure. Too big she may not fire at all, too small it can still fire but
points will burn sooner. Many new ones are out of spec right out of the box grrrrrrrrrr. I see a ton more points failures then I do
condensors.

Yes, it's the correct one. Just an example of when people with no experience in the parts they are electronically cataloging, very common today.

Delco Remy 1869704

John Deere AT14468, about $10.75 at your DEERE dealer

NAPA ECH RR174, about $15.50

NAPA (value line) MPE RR174SB, about $9.75

Standard Ignition DR60, about $13.00

Standard Ignition (value line) DR60T, about $7.95.

Looks like this is situation when the pricing at the dealership isn't unreasonable.
 

The only voltage rating that matters is if the condenser will withstand the 300-400V spikes across it as the points open. 6V or 12V stamped on the side does not mean a lick.
Ignition coils are another dodgy issue . 1.5 to 2.0 ohms on a 6V system or a 12v system with a ballast resistor . And 3.0 to 3.5 ohms for a coil used on a 12V system whiteout a ballast.
What they call an internally ballasted coil today is not what an internally thermal ballasted coil was prior to 1950 or so.
 
I use a condenser tester. Leakage & Capacity are the test. Magneto's I have a capacity chart MFDS. CHINESE,Some after market, the
slot tang can easily short out when you tighten the nut, watch close trim the tang.
 
Kids and their computers.

Amps do the work not volts. Points are
designed for 4 amps whether it's a 6v
system or a 12v system. There is only a
minute difference in microfarads in the
early Delco distributor condensers no
matter which voltage. I converted my M
to 12v several decades ago and still run
the 6v part numbers.

The problem comes in with switching
distributer brands. It shouldn't matter
but somehow different manufacturers used
different values and even though they
fit they don't work well together.

Echelon RR 174 is the correct part
number.

Simply put, the condenser absorbs electrical energy that would otherwise be lost as an arc across the points as they open, wasting spark energy and damaging the points prematurely.

The saved energy is bounced back and forth between the coil windings and condenser a few times, lengthening spark duration at the sparkplugs.
