i have a problem with my john deere 40, when the tractor idles there is no problem. only when you accelerate it starts to pop softly. it runs at a fixed speed but through that you hear a popping sound every now and then. who knows what this can be? I have already put new bows and bows caps on it.

Don't know what you mean by bows and bow caps.

Of course you would start with new points and plugs. Check your timing. Adjust your valve lash." sounds like they may be too tight ". If that doesn't fix it there is probably a hole burned through in the manifold.

My 630 was doing the same thing. When I pulled the wire off number 2 plug it wouldn't idle on number 1 only but would run roughly at higher rpms. Pulled carb and deep cleaned it and it runs like a top. I thought ignition too. New plugs, made new wires, new cap and condenser.
