Tx Jim or Tom (Belt length)

The book says 466.5 on the long belts for
repair. What did you mean by 465? I ask
because I put a 466.5 new belt on a
couple years back and it is only
marginally tighter than the others.
Should I shorten them to 465 then? Also,
how do you measure the belt length...from
the middle of the splice?

I don't have access to a model 456 operators manual. I was posting belt lengths show in JD parts spec's.

I think an inch or 2 one direction or the other won't affect belt performance very much. I always measure from end of belt to end of belt.

Operator's and technical manuals available at https://techpubs.deere.com/en-US/Search/Equipment

Type 456 in the search term box and the options for machines will come up pick the North American round baler and you will see the JD manuals for it. You can purchase them as downloads so you can have them right away, that's how I got the manuals for my 435 Round Baler. Or you can order printed copies. There is a phone number there you can call if you have questions.

(quoted from post at 10:47:30 06/19/20) Thanks!

It turns out there is a copy of the 456 Operator's manual on line (http://manuals.deere.com/omview/OME97080_19/OME97080_19.htm). Here is a picture from the belt repair section giving minimum and maximum lengths as well as allowable variation in lengths between belts. Base specs are 461" for short belts and 466.5" for long belts. HTH
