JD544B loader eratic steering

It sounds like the steer valve is worn, I think I can rebuild that unit here,,I will look at one and see if it will work out on my test bench
 
Those can be a real headache to rebuild. There are 2 rocker shafts in the bottom of that unit that are extremely sensitive to adjust. You will need to try to find the parts [if still available ] to install new valves and sleeves. If the workbench gets bumped while adjusting the valves, start over. You will need the correct adjustment blocks to adjust. I personally would look at the steering cylinders first for leakage. Air in the cylinders will make for a poor performing steering valve. There is a bleeder on the side of the steering valve. I don't remember the exact procedure . try to look it up first, because the machine will take an abrupt left or right when the bleeder is opened. Been too many years since last experience with them.. Probably over 30 years...
