JD Coolguard 2 coolant

Is the JD coolant really that much better than a auto parts store antifreeze? I have been using it. It looks like the GM orange stuff. Stan

I've been utilizing Cool-gard in my '91 4255 for many yrs. Speed/hr meter showed 11,420 hrs. I just picked up my tractor last Saturday from getting engine rebuilt. Problem was coolant was getting into crankcase. As it turned out liners didn't fail due to electrolysis but the liner o-rings had failed.

My tractors engine now has new liners, pistons,R&M brgs.

The additives are the difference and you can buy it by the quart at Napa. Back when I was at the dealership we didn't use the JD coolant. We got ours from Napa down the street. Always thought it was odd that any type of oil or grease had to be Deere but not the coolant.

When were you working at the John Deere dealer? Did you ask why? I find it interesting that a John Deere dealer would not use Deere
coolant. Did they know something we don't?

I hope I didn't imply JD put some other type coolant in my tractor because they installed Cool-Gard in it.

I was employed by local JD dealer from '66-'87 which BTW was owned by my oldest brother. He owned 2 dealer locations & a service center. He sold out in '88 per JD request because he didn't desire to purchase more locations

I use it in everything, because I only want to stock one, but that type should only be needed in a Diesel.

I hope they also put new seal in your water pump?? Hope it was not the source of antifreeze in oil?? DW

I installed a new water pump & coolant still got in crankcase. Then I removed the engine pan & witnessed Cool-Gard dribbling down #5 liner.

I'd like to know why JD engineers decided to drive water pump from timing gears instead of fan belts similar to the 4440. I'm unaware that 4440 had any reported coolant heating problems.
