620 pulley/clutch howl

Always had a slight howl coming from (I think) pulley/clutch
area on my 620. tedding hay yesterday, howl got much louder
(lessens when clutch is disengaged). I/T shop manual showed a
bearing on the pulley assembly and I wonder if this bearing may
be dry and making noise. I was thinking pull off pulley and
check/grease bearing.?.? Neighbor says to pull off pulley, rear
wheel has to come off to provide clearance. I/T shop manual does
not mention that...Has anyone had experience with this bearing
and/or removal of pulley ?? Thank you... Dan

"lessens when clutch is disengaged"

NOT likely that the clutch bearing or bushing in the clutch pulley is causing your noise.

When moving with the clutch snapped in the clutch pulley and the crankshaft are locked together/rotating at the same speed so there's no relative movement or the components of the clutch bearing so NO bearing noise possible.

On the other hand, when the clutch is disengaged and the pulley stopped that's when the bearing is doing it's bearing thing.

Is transmission full of oil (ensuring that the reduction gears and transmission input bearing are being oiled)?

Could be the transmission input bearing or the bearing on the outside of the reduction gear in the reduction gear cover failing.

Rear wheel may have to be moved outward to removes clutch pulley (which has to come off along with the reduction cover to get at the bearings I mentioned) but doesn't have to "come off", (IIRC),

If taking the clutch apart BE SURE the factory match marks on the clutch driver and crankshaft are visible and note how they match so they get put back together in the same relationship for balance.
 
Thanks for answering...I did transmission and reduction oil
change in the fall, so both were filled at that point..I don't
see oil puddles, so I think both should be full..Not sure I am
smart enough to get into the bearing you speak of, but not sure
I want to keep using the tractor with this howl!?!? Thanks.. Dan
 
What gear were you in? Fourth and sixth will howl more than the rest of the gears. I blame some of my hearing loss on the gear howl in a 630 running fourth gear wide open.

Come to think of it, the howl was loudest running part throttle fourth gear while cultivating. It quieted down some running wide open.
 
Fixerupper...thanks for your replies...As you mentioned, I was tedding in fourth gear at half throttle. Maybe this howl is not catastrophic .?.? I can live with a howl if something isn't about to fail...Thsnks.Dan

It would be interesting to know if there's any unusual amount of metal filings in the bottom of the reduction gear housing.
 
I drained (and refilled) reduction housing when I did
transmission drain and refill in the fall and saw no filings
then....however, it may not be a bad idea to drain and refill
reduction housing again....just to be sure..A quart and a half
of gear oil is cheap troubleshooting...Dan
