John Deere 2510 won't shift after top shaft rebuild

Hello all,
I recently rebuilt my top shaft. Everything seemed to be working correctly. I have about 5 hours on the tractor since and shifting has progressively gotten harder. Right now it won't shift at all. The range side moves freely and clicks into the detents but, the gears just won't move. No grinding at all and I did try it while the tractor was off to make sure it wasn't the clutch. I did replace the detent pin with the ball style. Could that possibly be what's hanging up? I appreciate any advice!

What springs did use you use on the balls? Loosen the cap(or plug) and see if that makes a difference. My dealer has a box with about 6 different springs that he sends out and lets you pick what you like and bills you for the ones you use. Tom

I just tried shifting with the detent ball caps lose. It didn't make any difference. Now I can shift forward (into 1st, 3rd, 4th and 6th) but it won't shift back to the higher gears or reverse. Something must be caught in there. I guess I will take the top off and see what I can see.

Did you check shifter for excessive wear where it fits on the drums?

Yes. and they were worn some. I had someone build them up and machine them. It seemed to work fine when it went back together. It's
not like it isn't moving the gears far enough... It just won't budge. One thing that has crossed my mind is the tiny little balls
inside the synchronizer holder (for lack of knowing exactly what it's called). They were difficult to keep in place as I put the
shaft together. I was confident that I did get them all in there. But, now I'm second-guessing and thinking that if it's missing one
of those tiny balls maybe the spring behind it is getting caught. I really hope not though. That will mean doing the whole job over
again.

I do wonder about what you said about the balls dropping out when you reassembled the syncronizers. As a thought for "next time" I stand the shaft in cake pan I "borrowed" from the kitchen and line it with shop towels. After getting the blocker in place I check that there are no balls in the pan. The towels keep them from bouncing out. Don't ask how I came to do this.........

Good advice! I understand exactly what you mean after an hour on my knees with a magnet looking for those tiny, flying, bouncing little buggers. The manual shows a specialized tool to install them but, I couldn't locate one.

A friend made me one on his lathe. It is just a cone. The first one I ever did I tried to do without the tool. After about an hour I took it to my dealer and had him do it. Tom

I fashioned one out of a funnel. I had my dad for an extra set of hands and eyes too. But, I'm wishing I had taken it to a dealer now too! The more I think about it, that's likely my problem. The spring is probably catching in there.
