Input shaft removal

450 jd. I have a manual for this. Do i really need to remove the top HLR cover on the tranny to get the input shaft out? I think this is what the manual says. Stupid design if I have to. You would think I could pull it right out front of tranny

You are supposed to support the clutches to pull the input shaft as the front clutch shaft is running on a bearing which is located inside the input shaft. If you don't you run the risk of displacing or damaging the seals further back on the clutch shaft and likely will have trouble getting the clutch packs up and in line to put the shaft back in.

thanks Jim. Today some farmer told me he
once drilled a hole in bottom of
transmission case and threaded a bolt up to
hold the clutch pack from dropping. I
think that's not possible if there is a
snap ring that needs to come off before the
shaft would even come out from the front on
transmission case.
