JD 70 Left Brake Grinding

I have a 1956 70 gas that the left brake squeaks on. When I first got it I could push out and down a bit on the pedal and it would stop. So glad not major! I replaced the pads which did not help. I then bought a used brake pedal shaft bolt and it got worse. I then went back to the original bolt and managed to put some shim stock around the bolt and the housing and eliminated some of the play. It is now a bit better, but I still have to hold it down & out a bit to stop making the noise. Anyone else have this problem? Is it a worn out housing or just the pedal bolt or something else. Trying to figure out another option to make it quit grinding.

Thanks!

Try drilling a hole in the shoe to move the spring out and away from the shaft. Usually helps.

MSD, you got me to thinking. I didn't understand exactly how to do that, so I pulled up the picture below that I took to remember how to put it back together when I went back to the old shaft. Upon looking at picture closer, I know see where the brake drum is scraping the spring. Then upon looking closer I see the top spring is "under" the shoes and the bottom one is on top and is rubbing. I bet I can put the spring under and solve my problem? I am not an expert and my dad who had a 54 70 in the 70's but never had to work on brakes didn't know either. I will take a look later next month when I take it out of storage. I will update after I am done. Thanks for everyone input!!

If you redial the holes a little to to outside it helps also. About a 1/4" does it.
