Hi guys, searching for a used discbine. Some of the older John Deere’s seem priced right, were they troublesome machines? The 910,916,920 models.

I have a 920 and get along good with it. Do not buy any of the older ones like a 1460 as they were not a Deere cutterbar and parts are crazy high. NH used the same cutterbar in the 408-411 machines. Mine is a roll machine but it seems they were more sold with impellers than rolls. Tom

Ok thanks tom, is the 910,916,920 different series as far as old to new? What tractor do you pull your mower with? How is cutter bar maintenance? Individual oil or one resorvoir? Email open if you want to send phone number, thanks.

The 920 was made the same time as the 930. The 920 is a 9ft and the 930 is 11. The cutterbar is all one resorvior that uses Deere Hy Guard hyd fluid. I pull mine with a 4020 or the 4230(it is a cab tractor). I always cut in 5th unless super thick and down then 4th. My son has cut in 6th and once 7th but that is way to fast for me.Mine is a very hi acre machine and is starting to show it. Last year we replaced the turtles as they had holes worn in them. If you catch it in time you can change them around on the cutterbar so the opposite side wears.I was originaly from MD and we had lots of limestone rock ledges that were death on discbines but the Deere took them the best and were the easiest to fix when wrecked. My farm here in WI does not have a rock on it and very few stones. I will run two or three years on a set of knives. We just touch them up with a grinder every other cutting. The Deere will drag up once in a while on the outside edge when cutting point rows. The NH machines have an open ended cutterbar and will not do that. The Deere corners very different than a NH as well.I like my 920 but would not turn down a low acre NH 1409. I used a New Idea 5209 and the machine worked fine but I did not like how it layed the down when we went to rake it. You could not rake a nice windrow in thick grass with a bar rake. Tom

Here in Ohio the old 5209’s were very prominent and still are but are just getting old. Other than a 5209 all I have ever pulled is 7 and 9 foot nh haybines
