John Deere G starting tank

I got a question here, recently picked up a John Deere G and got to looking a little closer and noticed there is no starting tank or even a hole or anything for one. I guess I was under the assumption all G tractors were all fuels from the factory and had the starting tank behind the fuel tank. So is this one an odd duck only having the main tank?
 
"G"'s were supposedly all built with two tanks, although Deere marketed gasd pistons and manifolds for them to be installed in the field. I've also read these parts were not available until G production has
ceased in 1953.

The last I knew, there had been two G's found that had no evidence of ever having a starting tank for all fuel, supposedly meant for gas right from the factory. No price list ever showed gas as an option for
the G, so who knows how many were built, probably only a handful. Perhaps more have been found in the past decade or so?? But you MAY have stumbled on to something quite rare!

Is the main fuel tank larger than a normal G? That would tend to support a factory set-up. Late gas A's had an option of the two tank set-up, with the starting tank being a reserve fuel supply. Maybe something similar was tried on a G, along with a gas set-up. If factory, it is a rare one.

From the factory, all the model G built were all-fuels with two tanks.. At the end of there production
run, Deere offered a kit to change the tractor over to burn gasoline.. Kit included - head- gas tank-
hood - carburetor - fuel lines - manifold. No information as to how many kits went out..
 
Interesting. I'm guessing that most bought just the pistons and manifold, which is what my dad did in the early 70's. Is the hood and tank listed somewhere in the parts catalog???? Your explanation makes a lot of sense.

First off, I think you have to have so many posts before they will allow you to post pics.
Second, this site has had more than its share of bugs and hiccups since they went to the new server a couple weeks ago.
Maybe go to the Site Comments forum down below and explain what is going on. They will be able to help you out.
 
That would make sense about the kit..... as for the pictures and number of posts deal, what if I pm them to someone and they can post them?
 
That would work. As for the kit, I have not seen a reference to a different tank or hood in the parts catalog... looked online this afternoon.

Nice looking G. I'm guessing there is a bigger tank in there, as the choke lever has been re-positioned to the hole normally used for the fuel shutoff valve to control the gas and all fuel tanks.

In the early 90's I saw one in NY state at a winter farm equipment show. The owner was not sure of its history, but knew it was unique. JR Hobbs, past writer for Green Magazine (now deceased), mentioned that
2 had been found.

I'm no expert, but I have never seen any info on the kit. Looks good though. Where is the tractor located?
 
Northwestern Iowa, I believe the older gentleman that I got it from didn't know that it was even supposed to have 2 tanks, he got it from somewhere out of Wisconsin as a backhaul many moons ago (he drove truck), it had been sitting in his shed ever since

I'm in WI. I've never seen one here. And here is a thought- the neck is in right about the same spot as an early 70. I'm wondering if the tank Deere supplied (if it was Deere) was one from an early 70???
Seems logical vs building something special just for a kit that nobody knows anything about...
 
A serial number may be helpful in finding out the factory options. I have a way of helping in that area.
