I have a customers side console 4020 that he put an M&W turbo on it a year ago or so and it just started making a very loud and annoying whine. It is more of a whine then a whistle and it does it worse between 1500 and 1900 RPM with no load and it gets the loudest for a second or so when backing off the throttle with no load. It sounds the same with the exhaust stack off and with the air inlet and the outlet lines disconnected from the turbo. The turbo feels nice and tight and spins what I would call normal. No apparent exhaust leaks and I do not think it is a noise from a boost leak as it goes away under load.The only thing I see funny with it is the turbo drain hose runs pretty flat for a little ways and need rerouted.
I am thinking something funny is going on with the turbo, but my diesel shop that does turbo rebuilds don't seem to know for sure what could be causing it either.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
