If he can't shift with a decal beside the shifter, then I think those pages you sent him will confuse him even more, but I think it is mighty nice of you to try to help him.

Did he like it better than the 60 after he learned to shift it?

He had to, I traded the 60 off on an Oliver Super55. LOL
Of course then I traded the Super55 off on a 1550 and he adopted that.

There are 4 ranges with a low, high and reverse. You have reverse on the first 3 ranges on a 10 series unless the shift parts have been updated than you only have reverse on the first two ranges. It is still there just blocked off. The moving it to the side you talk about on the fifth gear is so that you do not pull the shifter down past fifth into reverse. But when backing up you can easily shift from fifth to reverse (same thing on third and reverse). Works sort of like a reverser when doing loader work. Hope this helps. Tom

Yep, I told Dad to think of it just like the Quad Range on the 4040 except all on one shift. A B C and D range, then up and down for high and low, just no power shift to a higher gear in each of the others is all.

LOL That brought back a memory Leonard. When I bought my 3010, I hooked it to the hay rake and told Dad to use that instead of the 60 to rake hay when he got there. I was cutting in another field and when I went home, there were skid marks and divots all over the gravel road where he'd been trying to shift it. It was back in the yard and the 60 was gone. When I asked him what happened, he started cussing and said he couldn't find the gears in that thing.

I sat him on the seat and showed him that there were 4 ranges with a high low and reverse in each range. Up for low in each range, down for high, over farther and down for reverse. When he saw it that way, he picked right up on it and didn't have any trouble again.

Thanks for the help guys..The 3010 is always hooked to a Ford 501 sickle mower and I pull her out one day per year to mow along some very long driveways we have. I gutted the mower and installed a hyd. cylinder to tilt the bar to a low angle position. I cut finger size willows and tall weeds and grass. About 2200 hours on the JD AND ONLY using one day per year--the shifting is always somewhat new to me....The 4010 is hooked to a Big Woods rear discharge finish mower and I use it about 2-3 times per month during the summer......

If it has that few hours, it's not the one I had. I traded that one off to Jim Crawford right there south of Clare for an Oliver 1600. He only wanted $2500 for the Oliver, but put $5000 on the 3010 as soon as he got it. I don't know what he finally got out of it, but as worn out as that thing was, I still think I got the better end of that trade.

I suggest that you remove the dash cowl (4 screws), then you can figure by yourself how it works. No magic in there. You will see that moving shifter side to side while in a station does nothing.

When I worked at the dairy we had a white 2 135 had a four inch square hole and thatís what you got to try and figure out what hole you were in the only one worse than that was a Belarus with the twist top shifter

Is this a real question? If you're in 3rd or 5th the shifter will move side to side within that gate just like the decal shows, but without changing gears.

You are still with us Lenray so I guess this is a real question. You have identified 1st, 6th, and 8th gears and the two reverses. A poster posted the shift pattern and you said you do have the decal present. IF you can do 1, 6 and 8th and match them up with the shift pattern decal, the other 5 forward gears are exactly the same as shown on the decal. I dont know what else to say other than to experiment with shifting and make note of your ground speed. You will catch on, its easy.
