JD 1010W Transmission Fluid

While evaluating a new "unbalanced" noise and vibration coming from my engine at higher RPMs I found that my transmission/differential oil is quite a dirty brown color. I had planned to flush and refill the case with the recommended oil but found a single ball bearing in the drainage. All other fluids seem good on the tractor. Would dirty transmission fluid potentially cause the noise and vibration or is finding the ball bearing a sign that something much more serious happened? Any suggestions where to go from here? Thanks for any help you can offer!

Live pto or transmission driven PTO ? Does the vibration change with the clutch depressed or the PTO engaged or disengaged ?
engine gas or diesel ?

This is a 1965 JD 1010W gas engine with a live PTO. I have not used it enough lately to tell if the sound is worse with the PTO engaged. What I noticed is more noise and vibration at higher RPMs. It sounds great at idle.

Now that I think about it more, I'm not sure if this is considered a live PTO. There is a separate lever to engage the PTO on the transmission case.

Until getting in there, there is no way to know if the ball bearing is a legacy issue from sometime all the way back to the factory.
Being as gasser it is worth keeping in operating condition. Looks like next winter's tear down project.
Most motor oils are GL-4 rated and that is better than what the factory poured into the transmission. Or Hy-Gard to keep the same product in the pto, hydraulics and transmission.

If you push in the clutch pedal when the PTO is running, and it stops, it is not live.

Original trans oil was just 80W mineral oil with no EP additives and some of that stuff was brown. Near the same thing as non-detergent 30W
motor oil. One some machines, adding a more modern oil can cause problems. Especially with a synchronized transmission or with wet clutches
or brakes. As I recall, you have none of those issues in your 1010. Subsequently I supposed any 80W or 90W gear oil will be fine. I would
not use Hyguard because it may be too low in viscosity and might result in some leaks. Hyguard it 10W or 20W oil. Whereas 80W gear oil is
30W oil.

Thanks for the replies. I found oil that meets the JD specifications and replaced the brown oil. The ball bearing I found was evidently intentional, fitting over a spring inset in the side drain plug. I have no idea what purpose it has, and is not shown in the parts catalog I have.

Unfortunately, the noise and vibration was not corrected with the fluid change, and is not affected by operating the PTO. Any other suggestions on how to isolate the source of the vibration is appreciated, but a major tear down or rebuild is beyond my abilities.
