Bought a later model 2240. Guy claimed to be selling it for someone else. Think it was only to claim ignorance when I found out it real condition. Done ranting. I have a similar problem with hydraulic chatter. Read some suggestions for diagnoses a little too late. Did have to split the tractor to rebuild the PTO clutch pack. To the current question, before I split the tractor I did test both clutch and brake pressures on the port by the PTO valve. 142# at idle on both sides. When I started increasing rpms the pressure increased a little and before I could get to recommended test rpms the needle on the 300# gauge was swinging so bad I could get a pressure reading. Is this an indicator of any thing? PTO clutch was toast.

I think at 142 psi although a little below spec's your tractors trans pump should be fine. It's possible a relief valve isn't properly seating loosing some psi.

To Jim, thanks for the reply. The short time Ive had this tractor it had quite a history. Two days using it the engine clutch went out. Split it and put a new clutch in it. While doing that I drained the hyd fluid and pilled the suction screen. It was full of ground up aluminum. Pulled the rock shaft cover to discover a 3/8 bolt had come out and the whole trans lube system had fallen in the gears and was ground up. Right brake wasnt working. Pulled the right final drive and found a piece of the aluminum was wedge under the square cut seal on the brake piston. Will check all hydraulic ports I can while waiting on new seals. Any other places I should check would be appreciated.

As much of a fan I am of properly maintained utility tractors of that era. That tractor was problem only serviced when the tractor quit moving. Could be dollars ahead and have fewer grey hairs if the tractor was sent to salvage sooner than later.
If you see that tractor jockey again, he deserves a good swift kick in the gonads.

Think I found where some of my hydraulic flow was going. Pull the steering column apart since fluid was seeping out between the column and transmission, and I could tell someone had been into it because there no gasket just rtv. Pulled the column apart and in the valve area 5 of the 6 o-rings were gone. The sixth one just crumbled as I tried to scrape it out. Hopefully a seal kit in the steering column will resolve the majority of the hydraulic issues. Im still checking everything I can. I really should make sure this a**hole the sold me this tractor doesnt reproduce but that would be a waste of time.

The guy before you did the right thing and got rid of it...the column orings are ornery to put in, it's like looking into a hole full of mirrors, be sure they get into the correct groove,,the bottom 2 are the hardest, These little tractors are great when they are good,,and very bad when they are bad..
