JD2020 shutting down

Hello

My 2020 gas, runs for about 10 minutes then shuts itself down. It turns the
electrical off. It does not seem to be overheating as it runs fine till this
happens. After it sits for 10/20 minutes it starts right back up.

I changed the thermostat

Any ideas?

Thanks

How and where are you determining it "shuts the electrical off"? Is this still a points type ignition? Is the wiring and electrical system original or has it had "upgrades"? A couple quick things to check. If you didn't check with a voltmeter or test light, check to see if there is still power on the ignition switch side of the coil when it quits. Check the wiring over for a short to ground between the switch and coil or bad insulator where the wire from the coil goes into the distributor. If those things check out, try a new condenser as Mike M said; they are cheap and lately there have been a number "bad out of the box" reports.

Take a quart jar and see how much gas runs out the carb drain in 1 minute.

And I believe the wiring is all original. Certainly looks original

Believe it’s still a points distributor but I’ll take the cap off to verify

There should be a circuit breaker behind the cowl, or in the dash area. If that is heating and tripping it could take the power out on everything and it would reset itself once it cools (often about 10 minutes). If that breaker is tripping you have a short somewhere. Find it and be ready to test with voltmeter or light when the tractor quits. If the breaker has tripped one terminal will have power and one won't. If both have power it has not tripped. No power on either means the supply to it has a problem.

You said the electrical system goes dead. So I assume the dash lights stop working? Like the oil-pressure light and charge light are not on when it is dead? If so, it is likely that little generic circuit breaker. I replaced mine in my 300B long ago. $10 item at any auto parts store IF that is the problem.

Circuit breaker will be a self-resetting 20 amp. I find they often get rusty and go bad.

I think you're on to something with the circuit breaker John. I had one go bad on my 1020 back in the 80s.

Thanks everyone. I replace the circuit breaker today and used the tractor for about two hours without any issues bush hog mowing and moving dirt.

Sure is nice to have it operating well again!!!
