Loader Tractor Recomendation

So, what is a good 50-70 hp MFWD tractor with mechanical or power revers-er for both field and loader work? Under $10K? If this number is to low how about under $15K. I am thinking in the 1970-1990 range. Good Steering and a Good MFWD design are a must.

My current reference is a 2wd JD 1520 with loader.

I am a JD fan but would consider other major brands with a good track record.

Thanks.

Paul

To know the used market price, the new market price has to be known first.
Self leveling loaders run $7200 for a 520M, $8600 for a 540M and $9900 for a 540R.
Getting into basic four cylinder chassis for more weight and stability. a 5090E is $53,000 and a 5100E is $55,000.
What is the intended use, how much shop time is acceptable and how much is acceptable for major service costs of wear and tear components ?

The odds of finding your what's on your wish list for under $15k is going to take a lot of shopping or some luck. You'll never find it even close to $10k. I was looking for similar about 6 years ago, finally ending up spending $14k and no reverser.
And just my opinion based on my experience with my Deere from that age class, you risk hidden or undisclosed hydraulic gremlins popping up and draining you for many thousands more.

1983 was the start of the 50 series with a decent M4WD and de-bugged hydraulics.
A 2350 listed at $20,000 US plus the cost of the reverser, TSS , M4WD and loader. All of $30,000 then.
All things considered, the 2020 vintage tractor is lower cost than the 1983 tractor.

The best field loader tractor in the 1970-1990 era would be the 684-884, 685-895, 4310-C80, etc. Some had shuttle, all had a straight line forward reverse quick shift for the left hand. Some had MFWD. All very user friendly and tough as nails and the Mount-a-Matic loader. I have 4 green ones and some red ones but the loader tractor is a 684.

I would argue that my 86 2550 didn t have debugged hydraulics. It was a mess. An expensive mess.

From 1970 to 2015 we used a 2020,2120,1640,1840 and 2355 all with loaders for daily livestock feeding.
The only one that has given any trouble is the 1640 that my uncle had . I am rather suspicious given how cheap he was. I all likely hood sae 90 gear oil or some other none compatible oil has been poured in.
Then again failed seals in the power steering after 33 years and failed O'rings in the independent PTO control after 38 years ain't bad either.
There would fewer problems if the operators had used the proper Hy-Gard, changed oil filters before they plug and changed the oil to remove condensation.
Too often the tractor is operated until it just will not function at all. By then the damage is too extensive. Ask any shop mechanic what they find.

Going down a tractor chassis size to the three cylinder. However with 4WD and R1W radial tires. And the 520M loader. It would still be a lot of loader tractor .
$7200 for the loader plus the tractor with the loader prep options.

I know its been a while since this post. But opinions are like belly buttons. My son back in about 06 brought home a 3320 JD compact tractor, He traded a 6140 Allis Chalmers 4x4 with loader for it. The Allis was 4? Hp. Would do almost anything but hyd was slow and one Reverse to slow and the other way to fast! It was good on a 6 row no- till planter. The 3320 JD compact was fast and hyd was fast enough. Plus it was a E-Hydro. But to little. He traded it for a JD 4320. Compact Cab Hydro 4x4 self leveling loader quick change bucket. Quick coupler with hyd top link. In other words every option. Think it is 48 hp. It is a 2008 model. Use it every day. Wish had another one just like it. A Ideal size to make hay. Pulls a 1219 JD mower conditioner. A 430W IHC baler. Plus puts 10 sm squares at a time on trailer and then into shed. Will load bigger round bales than neighbors 70 hp NH.

Paul I have a little bigger ones but also have a 4720 MFD with loader [56H.P.]which is a nice unit but compared to a 6000 series no comparison.More money but I sold a 6410 open station with 1500 hours in mint condition for $32K.I have the newer 6140R series and not uncommon to load two round bales at 3400# I had about 20 ford Boomer 8ns w/loaders that were around $20K that were neat little tractors.I bought a Kubota with cab and loader300 hours and looked new supposed to only be 40H.P. but that little tractor was a beast if I rememberI gave $20K for that which was wholesale

Gee, thanks Mr. Buick! That was a lot of work. It turns out this information is also helpful for another request I have. Paul

Oh, my favorite car ever were the two Buick Le Sabre's I owned. Hard to find a better car.

87 Grand National fully loaded that bought over the phone from my dealer on Jan 2nd 1987. Car rolled off the production line mid July 1987. Rust proofed by oiling annually. Added a few parts, runs in the 12's. Drove it daily until 2004. Still runs and everything works but it is worn out with 396,000km/246,000 miles. Parked in the barn up on the 2nd level where it is dry. We take her out for a drive most summers .

buick, There is a very important difference between the 2150 and a 5053E.

The 5053E is for sure not "The best" of what it is possible to make in 2020, and is made in India or Mexico where 50 Billion John Deere can make advantage of lower salaries. The design is totally infrior and much less clever than the older utilities.
The vertical push up hand throttle make ME THROW UP. I would crucify the engineer that designed this. He should have no right to put a Deere sticker on this pile for this should not bear any ressemblance to a Deere 4020 or 4430. I wish I was rich so I could buy all them piece of crap and demoslish them with a big excavator...

The 2150 was replaced by the 6000 series tractors, with the latest technologies and the best possible design. In 1983, Deere did not offer an equivalent of the 5053E.

I agree if b&d hasn't already he should buy one of those economy model JD utility tractors & operate in a few yrs before attempting to persuade other people into spending their $$$$$$$ on one.

I keep wanting a proper loader tractor however Mrs B&D has other ideas. Daughter in college, new truck, house for daughter in college, new furnace, new central AC, new water heater, new basement floor, new outside deck, new kitchen and last weekend a new roof.

The 5000 E series was suggested as it is the lowest dollar way into a 4WD loader tractor that has not been pre-abused.
I would hope it would work better and be a better value 20 years down the road . Vs purchasing a tractor and loader with 30-50 years of wear, tear and deterioration from mud/manure/chemicals/moisture.

Should we recommend this plus another $9000 for the 540 SL loader ?

I keep wanting a proper loader tractor however Mrs B&D has other ideas. Daughter in college, new truck, house for daughter in college, new furnace, new central AC, new water heater, new basement floor, new outside deck, new kitchen and last weekend a new roof.

The people you try to convince to buy a "new tractor" may share the same problems as yourself.

Myself if I need a piece of equipment or truck for our farming business my wife doesn't have the final decision on purchase BUT I darn sure do have that decision because I get to pay for it!

Naw you just choose to do what you're told.

I did that same thing with my 1st wife for 15 yrs. That marriage ended in a divorce & then I was single for many yrs & learned there's another way to live.

My current wife must enjoy it because my ""home cooked meals"" are ready to eat everyday,my clothes are washed/hung up ready to wear. Due to my disability she even helped me add refrigerant to my truck this AM before I left to check cows. She's also helped put some air in low tires on my truck because I can't bend over very easily. She also puts gasoline in her truck.

Life is Good.

More seriously, I did this search on Tractorhouse:
choose category 40 to 99hp tractors
Then filter by above 70HP, MFWD, before 2000, with Keyword "Loader" and price range "10K to 15K

Got this list:
Only 4 tractors show up.

The Deere 2940 is surely dreaded by TimS, but with a 260 loader for $12900, some would take the risk.

The AGCO is cheap and is made by Same of Italy . It has a Same air-cooled engine. Some Same are very very good (Mercury 85, Laser 100) etc..; ) But some newer ones are cheap and do not support abuse, and this one is it.

The Fiat 85-90 is a very good tractor, but is in Denmark. It is a "collector" item, because made for a very short period.

Then there is a Case CX70, probably not a super bad tractor. Mostly a New Holland painted red. Could be the best tractor of the band.
